The Battle of Earth begins today

You can now read the story of the Human Legion’s final campaign. The Battle of Earth Part1: Endgame and Part2: Restart are available now in the Kindle store to buy, or borrow for free if you’re a Kindle Unlimited subscriber. Paperbacks are not yet ready, but should be by mid-week. I’m really proud of this double-bill climax and I think it benefited more from Recon Team advice than any other book, so thank you; it was a team endeavor. It’s been a while since the last main-line Legion novel, War Against the White Knights, was released, and I know some readers have subsequently come across me from my work with Revenge Squad, the Four Horsemen Universe or elsewhere. For both those […]

The Battle of Earth is coming

It’s done. The Battle of Earth will begin soon. I don’t normally type THE END, but it seemed fitting this afternoon, because today I finished writing the Human Legion. When you add in the spin off series, including the mighty Sleeping Legion from JR Handley, then once these final books are published, that will take it to 1.6 million published words in the Human Legion Universe. To put that in perspective, Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files novels weigh in at just under 2 million words, Harry Potter is 1.1 million (with 260,000 for Order of the Phoenix alone … I knew that book went on a bit!), and 1.25 million for Iain M. Banks’ Culture books. Recon teams are on standby, […]

New artwork. New novels. New beard.

I’ve been quiet but busy. As you may have noticed, artist Vincent Sammy has been steadily supplying replacement artwork for the main Human Legion series. It’s not just the image on the front: the paperback covers have been redesigned, and some of the front and back matter of the books redone (which is fancy publishing talk for the bits that go before and after that actual story – the story hasn’t changed). It’s been a lot of work for both of us (OK, mostly for Vincent) but I’m pleased to say the work is finally complete and I can show it off in all its glory. Thanks, Vincent. I’d buy you a pint but it’s a long way to Cape […]

The 2016 Legion Campaign, and advancing into 2017

I want to thank everyone for their contribution to the Legion in 2016 and hope you join us for the 2017 campaign. It’s been a hard year, and with long gaps between releases, but we’ve both grown as a team, and delivered some books I’m truly proud of. And I keep saying ‘we’ rather than ‘I’, that’s because these book projects have all been team efforts. Our first release came out in February 2016. This was a multi-author box set called The Empire At War, featuring some British military science fiction authors: Chris Nuttall (Ark Royal etc.), PP Corcoran (Discovery of the Saiph etc), Phillip Richards (The Union Series). I’m in it too with Marine Cadet, an exclusive Human Legion […]

Get yer Crimson Worlds ‘ere. For free

Military SF fans have probably heard of Jay Allan, who has been busy working on his new series for Harper Voyager recently (Far Stars) and most recently his new series Duel in the Dark that came out last week (kicking off at 99c). Jay started off with self-publishing the Crimson Worlds series, which I remember reading as they came out. Good fun and  a more strategic view of the military campaign he describes than most authors use. Last thing I heard, the series had sold 800,000 copies. Not bad! I mention all this because there’s a compilation of the first three books that’s free. At least, it is today and it is in the US and UK. I can’t speak […]

Starship Troopers and Modern Military SF

I’ve been tracking the science fiction bestseller charts on amazon.com since the start of 2011, with particular attention to space opera and military SF. Yes, it is partially professional intelligence gathering to see what is and is not selling, and to get ideas for my next reads, but it’s much more than that. Science fiction publishing is going through its greatest transformation since at least the widespread introduction of the paperback, and as a huge fan I am simply fascinated to watch these changes as they sweep through publishing at internet speeds. For example, I can take the numbers given by Locus Magazine each year for the number of new science fiction titles published each year, extrapolate backward to the […]

Interview with PP Corcoran

I’m a great admirer of author PP Corcoran, author of the Saiph series and who is now working on another military SF series. We worked together on the Empire at War anthology. He’s just been interviewed here by SFFWorld and it’s worth a read. The Empire at War includes (amongst other great things) the first Saiph novel and also the first Human Legion novel, so if you haven’t yet dipped your toe in either series, this is a good way to do so. You can read the start of The Empire at War online straight away by following this link, or check out the Empire website here. You can find out more about Mr. Corcoran at his website: www.ppcorcoran.com In other news, […]

Did you win a signed audiobook on CD?

Last month I announced the new Legionaries group with the prize draw of a signed Human Legion audiobook on CD. The winner of the prize draw is Thomas with a Comcast email address and who I think might hail from San Diego. Thomas, if you’re out there, please get in touch. I’ve been trying to reach you for the past month! For everyone else, fear not, I’m going to do another draw at the end of the month for a signed audiobook (on CD) of your choice out of Marine Cadet, Indigo Squad, or Renegade Legion. My publisher (Tantor Media) gave me a few but they’re running out, so I won’t be doing this regularly with the audio CDs. There […]
