The 2016 Legion Campaign, and advancing into 2017

I want to thank everyone for their contribution to the Legion in 2016 and hope you join us for the 2017 campaign. It’s been a hard year, and with long gaps between releases, but we’ve both grown as a team, and delivered some books I’m truly proud of. And I keep saying ‘we’ rather than ‘I’, that’s because these book projects have all been team efforts. Our first release came out in February 2016. This was a multi-author box set called The Empire At War, featuring some British military science fiction authors: Chris Nuttall (Ark Royal etc.), PP Corcoran (Discovery of the Saiph etc), Phillip Richards (The Union Series). I’m in it too with Marine Cadet, an exclusive Human Legion short story called The President’s Son, an article on the state of British military Science Fiction, a suggested reading list, […]

What it’s like to make books

Our book mobilization is almost complete. Here are the dates: The Sleeping Legion book1: The Legion Awakes will be launched tomorrow (Dec. 19th). Revenge Squad book1: After War goes live on Tuesday (Dec. 20th) The Sleeping Legion book2: Fortress Beta City is launched on Wednesday (Dec. 21st) If you’ve joined the Legion then you should have received the Legion Bulletin this week with download links for exclusive books in the Sleeping Legion (military SF) and Revenge Squad (urban fantasy – space opera crossover) series. If you haven’t seen the Bulletin, then it may have been intercepted by email spam filters. GMail sometimes puts the Bulletin in the ‘promotions’ section. In this brief moment of calm before the releases, I thought I’d share a sneak peek into the work that takes place after writing and editing the books, and before releasing them. […]

Farewell to a real Swordfish pilot

I heard on the news today that Lt Cdr John “Jock” Moffat had died. You probably don’t recognize the name but it has significance for the Human Legion. Moffat was a Royal Navy pilot during the Second World War, and it was his torpedo launch from a Swordfish biplane that crippled the Bismark, a German battleship that was wreaking havoc with British shipping. This was in 1941, at at time when lumbering biplanes were long obsolete. But as Moffat himself said, the fabric-over-metal-frame construction used on these older and slower aircraft meant that the aircraft could take a lot of incoming fire while lining up for the torpedo strike, because the bullets and shells went straight through the fabric. Of course, they could just as easily pass through the brave men who flew these ‘stringbags’, as they were nicknamed. The success in crippling […]

Revenge Squad: Advance to Contact

After War, the first book in the new Revenge Squad series is out on Kindle pre-order now, and I can tell you it feels very exciting, and not a little nervous, to have this finally out in the world. You can pre-order from Amazon now, and they will post the book onto your devices on December 20th, because Amazon is nice like that. I’ll be saying plenty more about this urban fantasy/ space opera crossover series between now and Christmas, but for now a big thank you to everyone who helped with the recon edition, workshopping, my editor, Donna Scott, and artist Vincent Sammy. Search for ‘After War’ in your local Kindle Store, or if you’re in the US you can follow this link, and this one for the UK. If you like the book, or enjoyed the recon edition, […]

Revenge Squad goes on pre-release tomorrow…

… hopefully. OK, there’s still work to be done, but I’m 99% sure that we will see After War pop up on Amazon Kindle pre-release late on Tuesday. I’ve been working on the finishing touches to the paperback tonight. Here’s a sneak peek…
