JR Handley on his latest book, Operation Breakout

With the latest novel in the Sleeping Legion series fresh out this week, here are some calm and thoughtful reflections on his writing experience by its author, JR Handley. Writing book three, Operation Breakout, was definitely fun.  It was definitely a learning experience, and I wrote with the intention of fulfilling the call for action that I set up in Fortress Beta City.  I wanted to improve my writing because if we stop growing and improving, then we stagnate.  Stagnation is death in any endeavor.  With that goal in mind, I set out with the intention of focusing on the action, and limiting the need for meetings to organize the world.  Instead, I played with the POVs and let you know what was needed without losing the fast-paced fun.  I ended up with so much action that it was hard […]

Nick Webb’s Constitution deal, and my new book is out next week

One of the stars of the recent boom in science fiction literature is Nick Webb. Now, if your’re reading this, Nick, I would describe you as a very annoying kind of author 🙂 Not only does he sell a gazillion copies of his books, which come out more regularly than mine, but he also has a real job as a space engineer, has a PhD in experimental physics, and finds time to play Lego with his kids. How cool is that? Can this awesome individual possibly be human? I feel suddenly inadequate. I mention Nick because his most famous book, Constitution, is on a 99c special offer for the next 5 days.   I haven’t read Constitution yet, but I have read some of an earlier series he wrote under the name of Endi Webb (Nick’s initials are N.D. Webb), […]

The latest science fiction bestseller charts

Here’s my latest trawl through the science fiction top 20 bestseller and bestselling author charts on amazon.com. The point of these posts is twofold. Firstly it’s an opportunity to celebrate what’s hot right now in science fiction in books (and beyond), and secondly it also gives me a few minutes to rest my brain from my day job of writing my own science fiction books. My last trawl through the charts was here, and a long-winded mission statement here. Data was captured on 24th October 2015, but I’ve been looking in on the charts most days since my last post. Authors who caught my eye this time include Douglas E. Richards, S. Harrison, Joshua V. Scher, Rysa Walker, Tim C. Taylor and Joshua Dalzelle. Spontaneous celebrations erupted throughout the world this week as people called Joshua welcomed the news that two […]

This week’s science fiction bestseller charts

Here’s my latest trawl through the science fiction top 20 bestseller and bestselling author charts on amazon.com The point of these posts is twofold: it’s an opportunity to celebrate what’s hot right now in science fiction in books and beyond, and I write it in chunks to give me a few minutes at a time to rest my brain from my day job of writing my own science fiction books (and with a book launch later this week, I need that occasional break). My last trawl through the charts was here, and a long-winded mission statement here. Authors who caught my eye this time include Andy Weir, Margaret Atwood, and Kameron Hurley. Chart positions were captured on 2nd October 2015. Top of the bestselling books was The Martian and the bestselling author was Andy Weir. No surprise there. With the movie […]
