Altered Carbon coming to NetFlix

I’m guessing I’m late to the game on this but I’ve just read an article about the TV adaptation of Altered Carbon,  the 2002 novel by Richard K. Morgan. I remember reading this when it came out and was one of the last paperbacks I bought (I was already reading eBooks by then, but title availability was limited). I thoroughly enjoyed it and its sequels. Morgan paints a grim future with touches of cyberpunk, and military SF, but at its heart it’s a mystery thriller. With guns. I knew Morgan said he had an offer for movie/TV rights very early on, and that was what gave him enough financial headroom to concentrate on his writing. Didn’t think it would ever get […]

I’m interviewed in SFFWorld.com

SFFWorld.com have just posted an interview with me here. I splurge on about the origins of the Human Legion series and other stuff besides. It’s my first interview in a long while. Why not  hop on over, take a read, and leave a comment? Comments leave a smile on the faces of the good people who put together these websites for our pleasure (plus it makes me look good 🙂 ).   In other news, like me many of you will have enjoyed the Frontlines series by Marko Kloos. Not content with writing a killer bestselling book series, Mr. Kloos has devised a recipe for the Shockfrost cocktail he mentions in his books. Frankly, that’s just showing off 🙂 I […]

The Legion’s plan of campaign for 2016

I made a decision about the Human Legion books a week ago, and now that the website is back up and running, it’s time to share that with you. Sit down and take a stiff drink first; this might hurt. For over a year now, the Human Legion series has been conceived as a series of six novels*. That’s still the case, and I am already working on the finale: The Battle of Earth. In February 2015, a month after the release of Indigo Squad, I recruited Ian Whates as a co-writer for three principle reasons: To at least maintain the rate of releasing the novels, and preferably to reduce from every four months to every three months. To take […]

Human Empire release update

Bad news on the release date of the fourth book: Human Empire 🙁 A month ago Ian and I were confident we’d be finishing the book around about now, and handing it over to the Recon Team prior to a mid-September release. We’ve slipped. A release early October is more realistic. Between Ian and myself we’ve had one bereavement and one very ill family member in recent weeks. I’m not apologizing for any of us putting family first under difficult circumstances, but I am deeply disappointed that we’ve lost all traction for 2-3 weeks. We’re back in the game now, though. Well, nearly… I’m taking my family for a vacation next week. We think the book is well worth the wait. Well, […]

A big announcement about the Human Legion

I love writing the Human Legion books. Even though I have the story mapped out through to book six (and beyond for possible successor series), I often can’t vividly feel what is happening in the minds and hearts of my characters until I’m writing a scene for real. Sometimes my characters surprise me. They aren’t shy about telling me if my story isn’t right, or if they have a more interesting tale to tell than the one I had planned. Consequently I often update my ‘masterplan’. To give a timely Waterloo quote, the Duke of Wellington once said of Napoleon’s marshals: “The French plans are like a splendid leather harness which is perfect when it works, but if it breaks […]

Renegade Legion is even closer…

Thanks to the detail built up from the Recon Team’s  reports, the new book is shaping up very nicely now. I’m honored that so many are helping out. Thank you. I’m going to be setting the book out on pre-release from Amazon very soon. There are still many spinning variables to set a date yet, but it will definitely be this month. If you are in the Recon Team and haven’t yet passed any feedback, then there’s no need to rush or feel your input would be wasted. The earliest I would be building a version for publication would be late next week (let’s say the 21st). And even if you have comments to pass on after that date, I can […]

Beowulf’s support craft

Five new articles have appeared in the ‘Classified Military Data‘ section, each describing a class of vessel carried by Beowulf. Several of these have seen action in the first two Human Legion books. You will see more of them in the third book, Renegade Legion, including our first use of dropships. The best way to read the articles on support craft is to start with the introduction here.

Don’t buy my book!

As I come across exciting new releases and special offers on space opera and military sci-fi books that I’m interested in, I’ll occasionally post the news here. It’s not going to be an everyday thing, and it’s not an affiliate advertising thing where I get commission; I just think that if you enjoyed the Human Legion books, you might also enjoy occasional updates on books by great authors such as Marko Kloos, Christopher Nutall, and Phillip Richards (to name just a few). All that’s still true, but I’m going to first of all mention a book that was put on pre-release last night. It’s called Total Conflict and is an anthology of 18 short stories about conflict, nearly all of […]

A space opera book launch… with Lego!

I am proud and excited to announce that Indigo Squad, the second book in the Human Legion series, is working its way through Amazon’s servers to be available from the Kindle Store within the next 12 hours. It will initially be available as a Kindle book, with a paperback to follow a few days later. The initial price will be 99 cents, or the equivalent in local currency, and I will keep it there for at least a week before raising the price. My intention is to follow this pattern with the other books, to give humanlegion.com subscribers the chance to get each new book at the bargain price. My son is very excited. He’s been spending Christmas vacation dreaming up Lego constructions, and to […]

Scottish Independence, Railguns, and the regimental system

The Human Legion website is beginning to fill out. Today we have declassified information on the SA-71 carbine, the regimental system, system defense tactics, and a terminology primer on ships and Marines. Also, there a fun (hopefully) article about the Scottish Independence referendum and science fiction And an article on the science behind military science fiction.  More articles and free fiction to come soon. Enjoy and let me know what else you would like to see here.  Freedom can be won!
