The Reality War
Before I wrote the Human Legion books, I wrote the two Reality War novels. They're set in the Human Legion Universe but are completely standalone.
Originally published in 2011, I rewrote them in 2021 to better fit in with the rest of the Human Legion Universe.
The two books tell a tale of time travel shenanigans. They are also a science fictional re-imagining of John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress.
The Reality War is neither military science fiction nor space opera. But it is a miniature science fiction series that I'm very proud of.
- My short story 'Welcome Home, Janissary' (which has been published in a couple of anthologies) was originally an exercise in dramatized worldbuilding for the Reality War novels.
- The series was originally called My Future in the Past. In fact, I usually still think of it under that name. But pre-launch beta readers reported that the title was dull, so it was renamed about two weeks before publication.
- The two novels are named The Slough of Despond and The City of Destruction. These are locations in The Pilgrim's Progress.
- The cover artwork is by friend and award-winning artist, Andy Bigwood. He wasn't a friend then, but this was our first interaction. The artwork for The Slough of Despond is entitled 'The Watcher'. It represents a human character feeling the hidden presence of a reptilian version of himself. In The City of Destruction, the human is the one lurking in the background of a reptilian's mind. Spoiler alert: the time war isn't going well :-)

I’m hooked, the first two human legion books were great, can’t put down page turners. Please notify me when book three is available on Amazon.com.
Does Tom have other sifi books available on Amazon.com, if so what are the titles? I like the long books, it’s rare to for me to find a novel that 700 plus pages, most are in the 200 to 300 page length. It’s seems to me that when an author puts out a long book, like 700 pages you get a bonus, in author has a great story to tell and your not having to buy 4 books to get to read the great story. I do have a few books that the author had a good first book, got me interested, then I ended up buying 12 books so far, the story just continues, and that’s all bad, in fact I enjoy a good series, but the last few books were really short, a lot of repeat information. The author promised more books, just keeping series going really, but I don’t know if I’ll buy them, feel like I was cheated with the last several books. I understand that he needs to make a living, and that fine, but I think I’ll have to wait and see some reviews and length of the book before I purchase them. Nothing wrong with short stories, if that’s what you think your buying.
Hi Scott. I’m stoked to hear you’re hooked :-). There’s a definite wrap to the sixth book in the Human Legion series. And they are all sketched out with some key scenes written in each. So I guess the writing of the series is a little like the Harry Potter books in that respect, although I don’t look anything like JKRowling! If the series is successful I’ve ideas for parallel, prequel and sequel series, but they will be separate rather than tacked onto the end.
I did write a couple of books called the Reality War, which are available on Amazon.com. They are time travel rather than military sci fi. And they are less action oriented, but the first one was free last I looked, so might be worth a look! I saw them as one huge book, but my agent at the time persuaded me to split into two (it was being touted around Harper Collins at the time).

Marine Cadet (The Human Legion Book 1)

I didn’t get halfway thru the first chapter before I was hooked and on an adventure like no other I have ever taken.
Mr. Tim C Taylor has a way of writing that flows smoothly and seamless. Then every so often he places a bomb. He places them with the expertise of a seasoned author, which just sinks the hook deeper. He has a great since of timing, you never know when you will be laughing or cringing, you will be reading alone in the middle of a shoot out and he throws in something so funny and not expected that it makes you love the adventure even more. Or he can go in the opposite direction and the story will have the characters setting around just talking with their team and BOOM something really horrific happens and Mr. Taylor doesn’t skip a beat it is seamless…smooth.
He has taken the proud Marines, twisted and re-modeled them into a futuristic Branch for the conquering allies, that rule earth. They breed the human race into super Marines (fighting machines). What a concept…what a story.
The pace is fast and moves at a good click. Which is in my opinion is good because I couldn’t get enough of it. I enjoyed the way Mr. Taylor has put a great balance of war/fighting and personal insight into the characters and showed the camaraderie of the Marines themselves. It takes place around the year 2566 and we see what Earth has turned into. It is all orchestrated into this action packed science fiction series.
You can’t go wrong picking this book up for a read and if you get hooked, like I did, I hear Book 2, Indigo Squad (The Human Legion Book 2) is now out. I for one, am very glad this is an ongoing series, I’m enjoying the adventure. You can also join the Human Legion on-line and get updates and communications from and for the Indigo Squad. Mr. Taylor, I am hooked! Its been a while since I found a series that I could not put down. You had me wanting to know what happened next at the end of every chapter. In the time span of a few days i have read the First and second book and found myself transported to another time and place. In the beginning I found myself under the yoke of an unyeilding Supreme race, Plasma fodder and nothing more. My only purpose was to train and die. By the end off the first book I was able to celebrate small victories. By the end of the second book I had hope, not just for myself but all Humans. That is what good books should do.

Does Arun remember to factor in all of his assets? The cryo marines, the Trog, the Aux humans yearning for redemption? And what about the non hackers, can’t they play a role too? A squad of these types trying to prove their worth, much like the bomber squadron ‘The Leaper Colony’ in WWII?
He’s winging it at the moment. There are a whole lot more assets to acquire in book3. Not all of them are to be trusted.
That is good to know, since you so beautifully set up the potential of a Trog army for him!!!

In terms of the sides, Fraser’s picking the side that’s offering scraps of recognition and position for humans. He’s hoping that will be just enough to keep our species alive until we’re more strongly established. Arun wants more: he wants to fight for true freedom, but hasn’t such a clear idea yet on how he will achieve that. Not yet. If he could, Arun would consider keeping his head down and playing along while he bides his time. He doesn’t have that option, though, because too many things were said and done in Detroit and on Antilles that drew attention to him. That’s why the other faction keep such a close eye on Arun, close enough for Indiya to notice. They don’t like the idea of a rival faction and Arun is their route into uncovering it.
Arun and his brother aren’t really so very different, but find themselves on opposite sides. Although Fraser and Arun are twins, they spent many years in cryogenic pods. Fraser’s been awake for more years and seen and done more. That’s made him more ruthless. Maybe that’s how Arun will become if he survives long enough…

The book’s going to be longer than I planned, which is a good thing, because there’s a lot going on to write about. But of course, it will take a little more time.
I hope it will be, but even if the main book isn’t out by the time of our vacation (I don’t mean I’m going on vacation with you!) I’m writing some short stories in the evenings that connect the events of book2 and book3. Some of them feature characters that don’t normally take center stage — such as Caccamo and Dock — which is fun to write. They’ll be up on the website when I finish them off.

Tim, I got tired of waiting and have started a re-read. I’m not going to suggest anything, your mind is fertile enough. For a bit of perspective, my first Sci-Fi read was Beast Master in 1958. You tell a good story. Keep it up.

Hi Akinsola, thanks for asking, but I’m sorry to say I don’t believe we’re going make a January release now. We had some delays last month. I don’t want to set a pre-order date with Amazon until I’m confident of a date we can make. We’d written the first section by early October, so this is very disappointing. In the past I’ve sometimes put previews of the early part of the book available for readers on this site. Would you be interested in reading the first section to help fill the gap, or would you rather wait? I know some people are adamant they prefer one over the other. Best wishes, Tim.

Thanks, Al. I’ve been too ill to work for a few days, so it’s been a delight to come back and read your kind words. Yes, indeed, Springer has something of a new lease on life and she has an important part to play, as do her children. I haven’t forgotten Saraswati either, although I haven’t entirely firmed up where she fits in. Just to keep you guessing, some of what I’ve just mentioned gets most prominence in ‘Human Dynasty’ which will be a series set some time after the events of the Human Legion books, which will mostly pass the baton on to a new generation but some of the older characters will still be around. I originally planned to go straight from Human Legion into Human Dynasty but I’ve changed direction a little into starting off Revenge Squad first. So, Human Dynasty will be 2018, or possibly 2019. I have a such a lot of books I want to write! As for my next book, I’m taking a short break from the Human Legion to kick off Revenge Squad and I’m putting the final touches to the beta version of the first Revenge Squad book today. Hi, I recently became a fan and devoured the Human Legion series up to date. I have to listen via audiobook, is there any date when Human Empire book #4 will be available? Big fan keep it coming.
Hi, RoadD. It’s brilliant to hear you’re enjoying the books. Sorry, though, because I’ve bad news. I don’t have a date for the book 4 – Human Empire audio release. Back when there were only the first three books out, I licensed them to Tantor Media to produce audiobooks, which I think they, and narrator Tom Zingarelli, did a fine job with. But now…? I can’t even interest Tantor in updating the covers with the new artwork. I assume they were disappointed with sales. If sales of the eBooks pick up again, then I will produce the missing audiobooks myself (and I mean pay professionals to do it properly). But that’s a long way off. The only thing I can suggest for now is that I’ve opted to allow auto-narration on the Kindle editions. My son’s always listening to Kindle books talking to him on his Kindle Fire, and the quality of the text-to-speech is a vast improvement over the earlier Kindle models. Best wishes, Tim.

Sorry, Thor. I’ll correct that. I’m hoping to finish the Battle of Earth next week. Then it goes to the recon teams. Depends on what they find, but I’m expecting to release at the back end of May.
That’s the short answer. The longer one is that when I was most of the way through the novel (this was late last summer) I was made an offer to write a novel in the Four Horsemen Universe that I wasn’t in a position to refuse. That novel (The Midnight Sun) is coming out later this month. When I got back to the Battle of Earth, I realized that the reason I’d been a little unhappy with it was that I was trying to squeeze the conclusion to all the Legion story into too tight a container. So The Battle of Earth will come out in two parts released the same day and written in different styles. Hope that answers your question. Best wishes, Tim.
I enjoyed The Human Legion series. Nice twists and kept me interested even with the twists and plot turns. I hope you continue the story beyond Battle for Earth part 2. Early on when the main characters were young, the lack of skills in dealing with each other was frustrating but reasonable based on emotional age and experience. It would be nice to see more maturity developments as they have aged. I will be a buyer of your books going forward. Thank you

JR’s and airborne infantry veteran, and he brings a bit more maturity on small unit tactics. He showed me the binders he had to study on the NCO course. I kick off the next development in the Human Legion Universe in a couple of months with Chimera Company, set 3,000 years into the future. Mr. Taylor I just downloaded marine cadet and I’m really into it, I do audio books since that really works better for me, so I’m woundering if you’re planing on doing audio books for the whole series’s?
Hi Chris. I’m stoked to hear you’re enjoying Marine Cadet. So… to audios. Of the seven novels, only the first three are in audio at the moment (although all of sister series The Sleeping Legion are in audio). So, right now, all I can say is that the books all have text-to-speech enabled, which isn’t ideal, but works with Kindle Fires, Kindle Touch, Kindle Keyboard and Kindle for PC, Mac, iOS (and apparently for Android, although I’ve not used that myself). The reason there are only three is because that was all I had written when Tantor Media picked up the audio rights, and after the first three books, sales have been disappointing. I am looking at financing an audio production myself if sales pick up. Now, sales have picked up this past year, but they need to sustain that before I commit for doing the rest in audio (it will cost me around $10k to produce them). Sorry they aren’t all available.

Thank you for providing me with some very enjoyable hours spent reading Marine Cadet thus far. I am really looking forward to reading the series. Your writing is clean, clear, and well plotted thus far. Your characters are a joy to follow. I do hope the series doesn’t succumb to a problem that I find in many of these military science fiction series, and that is the portrayal of officers as being an obstacle to the plot. No military unit can be successful in their mission without strong leadership, in both NCO AND officer corps. Each must inherently trust the other and recognize the essential contribution each must make to the unit’s success. I am an alumni of the FT Benning School for Boys and have lived both sides of the divide, retiring as an O6 of Infantry. I hope the other books are as well done as Marine Cadet. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind words, sir. It’s always a vital boost to hear someone’s enjoyed my books. I hope I don’t disappoint with the sequels. It’s not giving much away, I think, to say that some of our human characters will have to learn how to fill officer roles (and some specialist roles ones too), something for which they haven’t been trained. They won’t find it easy. But someone has to do it.
