In the Wings

My latest book has just come out in Kindle and paperback editions from Seventh Seal Press. This is In the Wings, the latest Four Horsemen Universe anthology. The first anthology (A Fistful of Credits, 2017) was my introduction to the 4HU, and it excited me enough that I was soon writing 4HU stories myself. I hope this new 4HU anthology (the tenth!) will be a happy starting point for some more readers. In this book, fifteen of us have taken leading support characters from earlier stories and made them the stars they always were. My story was about how rogue trader, Captain Jenkins, fell foul of the Earth authorities and wound up plying the trade lanes of the Spine Nebula. […]

Are you willing to Hold the Line?

I have another book launch today! Hold the Line is the fifth and best Chimera Company novel and it’s published today by Theogony Books, featuring Vincent Sammy on the crayons. Audio will follow later with Steve Campbell on the voices. This is my 21st published novel, which means I have officially come of age and am now a writing adult. Or something. What I like most about this is that my writing has changed for the better since my first serious attempt at a novel, which was shipped around various publishers in the late naughties. A small press outfit called Solaris requested a full manuscript and sat on it for a year before declining. At the time that almost felt […]

Legion Bulletin #124

Octo Racing! Greetings from the sunny depths of England, where the Covid restrictions will soon be relaxed and I’m starting to plan some Octo Racing for August. Please don’t confuse this with the traditional races featuring elite sports octopi. I’m referring, of course, to racing octogenarians. As far as I can make out, my family’s enjoyed the beach at Walton-on-the-Naze every year since the 1930s, interrupted only by Adolf Hitler and Covid. My parents’ legs aren’t too clever these days, so their loving grandson has decided we’ll mark a racetrack out on the beach and push them in their wheelchairs. If I receive a concerned phone call tomorrow, I’ll know they’ve read this edition of the bulletin. Don’t worry, Dad! You’ll be strapped […]

Human Legion box sets are all available now

Greetings from Human Legion Lockdown HQ Being briefly in between projects, and temporarily not fit enough to write new stories (I think I had the Corona-bug – I was certainly in self-isolation for a couple of weeks), I finished off the second and final Human Legion boxed set, which several people had been bugging me to finish off. Just in time, as it turns out, because I’ve now started work on my fourth Four Horsemen Universe novel. As with the first boxed set, I added author notes and collected some short stories. Most of these were originally published in the Legion Bulletin a few years ago, but I tweaked all the stories and redid the notes. I can tell from […]

What it’s like to make books

Our book mobilization is almost complete. Here are the dates: The Sleeping Legion book1: The Legion Awakes will be launched tomorrow (Dec. 19th). Revenge Squad book1: After War goes live on Tuesday (Dec. 20th) The Sleeping Legion book2: Fortress Beta City is launched on Wednesday (Dec. 21st) If you’ve joined the Legion then you should have received the Legion Bulletin this week with download links for exclusive books in the Sleeping Legion (military SF) and Revenge Squad (urban fantasy – space opera crossover) series. If you haven’t seen the Bulletin, then it may have been intercepted by email spam filters. GMail sometimes puts the Bulletin in the ‘promotions’ section. In this brief moment of calm before the releases, I thought I’d […]

Corey Truax: Welcome to the team!

I am delighted to welcome Corey Truax to the team. Corey will be taking over editing duties for The Sleeping Legion series by JR Handley. I’ll be withdrawing to take a series editor brief and allow Corey and JR Handley to work together to make these books pop. Before I introduce Corey a little more,  I’ll give you a quick status update because we’ve been a little quiet over the summer and I wouldn’t want you to think we’ve been slacking off! With kids off school and even a vacation, going quiet is inevitable, I guess, but we’re back in the saddle now. Many thanks to everyone who helped out with the Recon Team edition of The Legion Awakes, the first book in […]

Introducing Sci Fi Explorations

A new science fiction venture is officially launched today: SciFiExplorations.com. I’m not involved myself, not yet anyway, but it looks good enough that I’ve signed up. So what exactly is Sci Fi Explorations? Well, there’s a website, naturally, and a mailing list. Sign up and receive a short story called Steel Eye from Ralph Kern, a new author I’ve been hearing good things about. “His first novel is a bit like Andy Weir’s ‘The Martian’,” someone told me.  She may have meant that Ralph Kern has an unhealthy obsession with potatoes and duct tape, but it’s an interesting enough recommendation to look deeper. And there is also a free series of Forever Gate stories from Isaac Hooke, whom I remember […]

Announcing the Human Legion Wiki

Today I’m very proud to announce the Human Legion Wiki is officially open. No doubt you’ve seen Wikipedia, but you might not be aware that there are tens of thousands of other sites based on the same Wikia platform. In a blurring between real life and the worlds of the Human Legion five centuries hence, the Legion Infopedia is now available for you to explore in the present day. Not only that, but you can go and contribute yourself. My thanks go out to the Legionaries who traveled time to construct our Human Legion wiki. These brave individuals are known only by their codenames: Homo Helveticus, and Porkchop NCR. Take a look, enjoy, tell me what you think is missing, and […]
